Step 11

March 13, 2015 by Kayce L.

The eleventh step ask us to meditate as a route to improving our conscious contact with God. Meditation means opening our mind and our spiritual energy to the God connection. Meditation and Prayer are powerful recovery behaviors that work.

Improving our conscious contact with God….this takes me back to when I first came into the program and I was so angry at God. It seemed to me all my problems and all my drinking were God’s fault. But I was told in meetings to choose my own conception of God and to remain willing, open and honest. I have found such great comfort in this. I have been able to lay aside my preconceived ideas of who I thought God was and at last been able to have a relationship with my Higher Power that is such a good one now. I read steps 10 – 12 every day and I believe that has helped me live successfully one day at a time.
I really appreciate this site. I don’t know how I stumbled across it a while back as I am from Illinois. But I use it just about every day. So thank you for keeping it going.
    Sincerely,
    Sheri W.

Yes He Is Thomas. Today I celebrate 2 years of sobriety. I keep giggling just thinking about it. I never in my life thought I could go 2 years! This program has saved my life.

  4. Tim says:

I always blamed myself. I knew and accepted god. To live in fear and watch the years go by isn’t ok with me anymore. As much as I’m ok with god, something still isn’t right to me. I guess I’ll keep plugging along and pray that I may, at some point, finally get it.

Tim do you attend aa meetings? The promises do come true if you work for them.. I, too, was sick and tired of being sick and tired.. I drank for over 30 years and thought I’d never be able to quit.. I’ve been sober now almost 2 years and it’s by the grace of God and Alcoholics Anonymous that today I am sober and happy and free of those fears… Don’t get me wrong life still happens but I don’t have to take a drink over it… Take it one day at a time don’t take that first drink and you will see the miracle I promise!!

      • Sheryl says:

So true. I had a terrible day yesterday
        and an embarrassing day today.
Did I think about drinking? yes.
Did I stop by the 7-11 to buy wine on the way home? No.
Everyone keeps saying it’s one day at a time and it is true.

I have come to believe that prayers are when we are talking (to our higher power) and meditation is when we are suppose to be tuning in or listening (to our higher power). Most of us are better at the talking then the listening part. That’s why they made it a step. We need to be told to do it, then learn how to from others, then practice it, everyday or to the best of our ability.

  6. Jay says:

I often get so thrilled with what God has done and continues to do in my life on a daily basis, that I pray and talk to God and thank Him so much for all He does for me. To turn Fear into strength, hate into Love, and set me on a path to Freedom; I can’t Thank Him enough. With 10 and a half years of staying totally clean from Alcohol, Drugs, and Gambling, I am able to work the steps and find myself, and do things that were never possible. My life was totally unmanageable.
